UNIFE Staff138 Message fromMichael Peter,UNIFE Chair 2024 was a year of change and a year of greatprogressfor the rail industry. We continueddriving innovation and reinforcing our vital rolein building a sustainable and connected future.Unfortunately, it was another year characterizedby the visible effects of climate change, furtherunderlining the importance of our work, and theneed to accelerate technology deployment. for our sector, Josef Doppelbauer who left hisroleas Executive Director of the EuropeanUnion Agency for Railways after 10 years ofdedicated work. 2024brought external changes marked bygeopoliticalevents including elections in theEU. We saw a year of fundamental shifts in well-established industrial sectors, like automotive, andfast advancements in key technologieslike Artificial Intelligence (AI). And we witnesseddevastatingfloodings in Spain and CentralEurope in 2024, and more recently destructivewildfiresin California. These climate-relatedeventsare becoming much more frequent, emphasizing the evident and urgent need fordecarbonization and climate resilience. It hasnever been a more important time for us as anindustry. The transport sector accounts for 1/5of CO2 emissions, which is why rail as the mostsustainable mode of transport must be top of anagenda of change. Firstly, I would like to extend my sincere gratitudeto the UNIFE Director General, UNIFE secretariat,UNIFE members, and the entire rail communityforthe collective effort and dedication thatshaped this year. Wehad important changes within UNIFE,welcomingour new Director General EnnoWiebe in June. Ennoembraced the role quickly leading theassociationthrough challenging times andpaving the way towards transformation. We saidfarewell to a great supporter and true enthusiast And we are ready. In 2024 the EU rail supplyindustry has shown again that it is well positionedin Europe and the world, to strive and acceleratethe green mobility transition. Decarbonization isa major driver for our market with governmentsinvesting heavily. This was highlighted in theUNIFEWorld Rail Market Study (WRMS) whichforecasts solid growth for the next five yearswith an overall growth prediction of 3%. In summary, we can be proud of all we achievedin2024.Our collaborative efforts and thecontinued dedication from the UNIFE secretariathave certainly advanced our progress. 2025 willbe a pivotal phase as we establish continuity andgrowth with the new EU Commission in place. Our priorities remain clear, and our importancenever greater. With our new UNIFE leadership, and with full support of the rail supply industry, Ihave every confidence that 2025 will be anotherstrong and memorable year for our sector! Wecan be proud that seemingly the wholeworld was watching as our industry presenteditspotential at a record-breaking InnoTrans2024. With 170,000 visitors from 133 countries, innovation was alive on every corner of over200,000m2 of exhibition space in Berlin. Thedecarbonization and digitalization agenda wasadvanced greatly at a hugely impressive andimpactful event. Electrification remains the keydriver for decarbonization, however importantadvances were made with battery and hydrogentrains particularly to reach more remote lines. Ona personal level, I am particularly excited abouthow our sector is leveraging the benefits of AI,for instance via analysis and assessment toolsfor predictive maintenance and their enablementwith strong cybersecurity foundations. Have a pleasant read, Michael PeterChair of UNIFE, and CEO of SiemensMobility InnoTrans 2024 showed that we are certainly onthe right track, and it served as a reminder thatwe need to further accelerate in specific areas. Akey challenge is to expedite the implementationof (new) technologies to help make rail even moreattractive. One example is ERTMS that can serveas a building block for seamless rail traffic acrossEurope. Here, we need to accelerate nationalrollouts to enable the earlier phase out of ClassB systems. Another example is FRMCS (FutureRailway Mobile Communication System) wherewe need to ensure a smooth transition from thecurrent GSM-R telecommunications system. With the support of the European Institutions,we can achieve these goals by: •EnsuringstrongEuropeanfundingforrailunder the next Multiannual FinancialFramework (2028-2034)•Promoting regulatory stability•Reducing administrative burdens Message fromEnno Wiebe,UNIFE DirectorGeneral 2024 was a turbulent year across European andglobal politics, which has made
