Ifwegetitrightcivilengineerscanproudlyclaimtohavemadelifebetterforpeopleacrosstheglobe.Ifwedonot,societywilllooktoothersforsolutionsasthedigitaleramakesiteasierfornewplayerstostepuptotheplatewithinnovativeanswerstotheworld’sproblems. Civilengineershavethroughouttime,alwaysinnovatedtosolvetheissuesoftheday.Bazalgette,TelfordandBrunelarerightlyfetedforbeingaheadof theirtimeinseekingtoovercomeseeminglyimpossibleobstaclestotransformpeople’slives. TheInstitutionofCivilEngineersiscelebratingits200thanniversaryin2018andcancounttheseengineeringgiantsaspastmembers.Thereisnodoubtinmymindthatthesegreatinnovatorswouldhavegraspedtheopportunitieswenowhaveatourdisposalwithbothhands.Asanindustrywemustfollowtheirleadandswap‘fasterandcheaper’for‘smarterandmoreeffective’.Wemustthinkaboutachievingbetteroutcomesforthesocietiesweserve,andwemustembracethenewtoolsthatthedigitaleraoffersus. Thereisnootherprofessionthatisinabetterpositiontotackletheissueofhowtomanagethedemandsofagrowingpopulationthancivilengineering. Thisreportgivesusagreatinsightintothechangeinmindsetthatallofus,asindividuals,businessesandprofessionalbodiesneedtoachieveinordertothriveandnotjustsurviveinthefaceofradicaldigitalchange.
