The global vineyard surface area is estimated to be 7.3 million hectares in 2021, slightly lower than in 2020. The world area under vines includes all surface areas planted with vines for various purposes, including young vines that are not yet productive. The vineyard surface area seems to have stabilised since 2017, with heterogeneous evolutions in different regions of the world. In particular, contrasting trends are seen in two main blocks of countries, with some EU countries and China and Iran driving an increase in vineyard surfaces, while large vine-growing countries in South America and Australia have seen a decrease. Wine production is expected to increase by 2% in 2021, while wine consumption is expected to remain stable. The international trade of wine is also expected to increase, with China and the US being the main drivers of this growth.
