Theadventofthedigitalandintelligenteraraisesenormoustechnicalandscientificchallenges,notleastthatofmarryingAIwithtraditionaldigitalsystemsengineering,asAIsystemsneedtobeintegratedintoindustrialsystemsforwhichwehavedeterminedreliabilityguaranteerequirements.Awell-knownlimitationofAIsystemsisthatitisdifficulttoguaranteetheirsafetyandlimittherisksassociatedwiththeiruse.AIsafetyisaglobalconcern, asevidencedbytheorganizationofinternationalsummitsandthemobilizationofinternationalinstitutionssuchastheUN. ItisalreadyclearthattheindustrialrevolutionexpectedfromAIwillnothappenwithoutasubstantialefforttobridgethegapbetweenwell-establishedindustrialsystemsengineeringpractices,whichfollowstandards-baseddevelopmentworkflowsandaimfortrustworthinessguarantees,andAIsystem.Thisrequiresacollectiveefforttodevelopacommondomain-specificdatainfrastructureandtechnology,aswellassorelylackingmethodsforbuildingaccurateAImodelsthatarestatisticallyconsistentwiththeirtrainingdatasets.Bettercoordinationofthiseffortneedstobeorganizedaroundreferencearchitecturesandstandardsforeachdomain,whichenabledifferentsolutionstobecomparedandassessed.Thisrequiresinternationalconsultationandcoordinationbetweencountrieswithastrongandextensiveindustrialbase,withleadingindustriesplayingakeyrole. Thiswhitepapershowsthatwiththeinnovationanddevelopmentofcutting-edgetechnologiessuchasAI andthecorrespondingapplicationsinthousandsofindustries,theworldissteadilymovingtowardsindustrydigitalintelligence. Iamconvincedthatallcountriesmustmobilizecollectivelyandinsolidarity toactivelycontributetoresearchandinnovationincutting-edgetechnologies,tobridgethegapandachievedigitalintelligenceinallindustrialsectorsand,ultimately,tosuccessfullymeetglobalchallengesandcontributetothewell-beingofhumanity. JosephSifakis,TuringAward2007 DigitalandintelligenttechnologiesarekeytoseizebusinessopportunitiesinalmostallindustrialsectorsandtocontributetotheaccomplishmentofgloballysharedgoalssuchastheSustainableDevelopmentGoalstargetedbytheUnitedNations. Theadvancementoftechnologicalinnovationinthedigitalandintelligentspaceisimmenseandiscontinuingtoaccelerate.Datasharingplatforms,thetransformationtoanedge-cloudcontinuumandthepowerofartificialintelligenceareprominentexamples. However,toleveragethepotentialofdigitalandintelligentinnovationtothemaximumextentpossible,threepointsarepivotalforsuccess.First,technologiessuchasIoT,bigdata,artificialintelligence,andcloudcomputingdonotformisolatedsourcesofprogressbutmustbedevelopedaccordingtoanintegratedarchitecturestack.Areferenceintelligentarchitecturewouldfunctionasablueprintforseveralactivitieswhichrequireglobalcollaborationsuchasstandardizationandthesupportofinternationalsupply chains.Second,digitalandintelligenttransformationisofstrategicimportanceand,thus,requiresastrategicplan, e.g.informofroadmapsandmaturitymodels.Bothwouldprovideguidanceandmeansofcoordinationtobusinessesandinternationalactivities,e.g.toreachthesustainabledevelopmentgoals.Third,asdataisthestrategicresourceofthedigitalera,thedatavaluechain,i.e.theentiretyofactivitiestocreate,collect,pre-process,store,makeaccessibleandsharedata,shouldfunctionastheconceptualfoundationtodeployvariousdigitaltechnologies. Thewhitepaperathandmakesanimportantcontributiontotheadoptionofinnovativedigitalandintelligenttechnologiesasitprovidesthereaderwithcomprehensiveoverviewsofthesolutionspaceinthedigitalandintelligentrealm,introducesconcreteapplicationcasesfromwhichorganizationsofvarioussectorscandrawfrom,anditsketchesthewayforwardtoidentityare
