AI Hub for Sustainable Development: Strengthening Local AI Ecosystems through Collective Action
Executive Summary
Africa stands at the cusp of a transformative AI revolution, powered by its youthful population, dynamic tech ecosystems, and expanding connectivity. This potential for inclusive economic growth hinges on collaborative efforts to responsibly develop AI across the continent. The Italian Presidency's decision to establish the AI Hub for Sustainable Development, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), was welcomed by the G7 Leaders' Summit in June 2024.
The AI Hub for Sustainable Development aims to serve as a pivotal platform for businesses, academia, and governments to collaborate, harnessing AI's power to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa. It prioritizes local community interests and focuses on three key areas:
-
Data: Ensuring data pipelines are representative and resilient, facilitating responsible and contextually relevant AI innovation. The GROW approach guides strategies for increasing data quality, accessibility, standardization, and regulation, along with investments in local capacities and digital public goods.
-
Compute: Addressing the need for scalable and performance-driven AI applications through a reimagined compute paradigm. This involves fostering strategic collaborations, advocating for alternative computing models, attracting investments, and implementing secure open data policies to ensure equitable access and infrastructure.
-
Talent: Mainstreaming AI education and research, building networks of talent, addressing skill gaps, enhancing both technical and soft skills, and increasing investments in talent development through industry-academia partnerships.
Looking Forward, the AI Hub envisions fostering an inclusive, well-resourced, and collaborative ecosystem to harness Africa's potential while promoting sustainable development. It acts as a catalyst for building a collective, responsible, and holistic pathway towards AI development, ensuring that AI benefits all while driving progress towards the SDGs.
