ABSTRACT:TheneedforSub-SaharanAfrican(SSA)countriestodiversifytheireconomiesismoreurgentthanever.However,despiteitsestablishedeconomicbenefits,severalchallengeshaveprecludeddiversificationinSSA.Againstthisbackdrop,interestinginitiativestofurtheradoptdigitaltechnologies,particularlyduringtheCOVID-19pandemic,suggestthatdigitalizationisapromisingavenuetoovercomebarrierstodiversification.Fast-pacedadvancesinthediffusionofdigitaltechnologiesandknowledgehavethepotentialtotransformSSAeconomiesthroughseveralchannels.Byconnectingpeopleandfacilitatingtherapiddiffusionofinformation,digitalizationalsopromisestoreshapetheindustrialstructureofactivitiesinnewandunprecedentedways.Therefore,digitalizationhasthepotentialtopromotediversificationandgrowthinSSAbyactingbothasanenableranddriverofeconomicactivities,helpingsupportresilience.Yet,whiletheempiricalliteratureonSSAsuggeststhatdigitalizationcanprovidenewopportunitiesforgrowth,employment,productivity,andinclusion,theimpactondiversificationhasnotbeenstudied.Thispaperaimstofillthisimportantgapintheliterature.ItalsoaimstostrengthenIMFengagementwithSSApolicymakersbyprovidingaconceptualpolicyframework,encompassingbothhorizontalandsectoralpolicies,onhowtoleveragedigitalizationtosupportdiversificationandboostresilienceinapost-COVIDworld.
