Trade-relatedactionsamongAsiaandthePacificeconomieswillbeinstrumentalinmovingtheworldtowardnetzero. Besidestakingstockoftheproblem,thisbriefaimstohighlighttheroleoftradeinthenetzerotransitionandevaluatevariousmodellingscenariosthatreachnetzeroby2050intheextantliterature. Thenextsectionprovidesanoverviewoftheglobalandregionalclimatesituationsince1995andunderscorestheimportanceoftradeinclimatechangemitigationfromtheoreticalandempiricalperspectives,withafocusondevelopmentsinAsiaandthePacificandfuturepolicychallenges.Inthefollowingsection,theroleofcarbonmarketsinthetransitionisdiscussed.Evenascoordinatedcarbonpricingcanbeaneffectivetooltomeetclimategoals,globalcooperationcontinuestobelacking,whileindividualcarbon-pricingprogramsarelesseffectiveandcancreateundesirableeffects.ThebriefthenevaluatestheimplicationsoftheEuropeanUnion(EU)CarbonBorderAdjustmentMechanism(CBAM)forAsiaandthePacificasaregionalcasestudy.Italsolooksatsomeinfluentialquantitativestudiesmodellingscenariosthatestimatetheimplicationsofpathwaystowardnetzero,andtradeandclimatechangescenarios.Thefinalsectionprovidestrade-relatedpolicyrecommendationsforregionalgovernments.
