TheVMCCrecognizethatmaritimeoperatorsarecurrentlyfacinglargeregulatoryhurdlestoreduceemissionswithnoclearpathforwardonhowtomeettheseobjectives.Itisourbelievethatbringingindustrytogetherhelpsfacilitatethemobilizationandimplementationofgreentechnologiesthatwillhelpshipownersandthesupportinglandbasedinfrastructuregettozeroemissionsfaster.Climate-drivenriskstotheglobalandlocaleconomyarealreadyhere,andtheissuesaregettingmoreurgent.Webelieveitistimetoacknowledge theextraordinaryemissionsfromtheshippingindustryandacceleratethetransitiontowardsazeroemissionsindustryhereinBritishColumbia. Introduction InternationalshippingemitsapproximatelyonebilliontonnesofCO2everyyear.It’sanindustryalmostentirelyreliantonfossilfuelswhicharethegreatestcontributortogreenhousegasemissions. Withoutintervention,theseemissionsareexpectedtocontinuegrowingwhichwillleadtoincreasesinglobalwarmingandtheseverityoftheassociated impacts.Anurgenttransitionawayfromfossilfuelsis required. It’sbeenestimatedthatby2030atleast5%offuelsusedbyinternationalshippingand15%usedbydomesticshipping1musthavezero-lifecycleemissionstoaligndecarbonisationwiththe2015ParisAgreementobjectives.However,thistransitionincorporatesanumberofchallengesincludingrelativelyhighfuelcosts,limitedproductioncapacity,andimmaturityofonboardtechnologies. Dozensofgreenshippingcorridorinitiativeshavebeenannouncedglobally.Theyareavehicletomobilisestakeholdersacrosstheshippingandfuel-supplyvaluechainstoaddressthebarrierstozeroemissionfueluptake.Initiallyfocussingontheearlystagesoffueltransition,theiraimistodevelopsupplychainswhilethetechnicalandcommercialreadinessofthesolutionsprogress.Theseinitiativeswillpreparetheindustryreacha‘tippingpoint’wherethesesolutionsstarttoscalerapidlybasedonmarketforces.
