The article discusses the current status of global storage resources for carbon capture and storage (CCS) as a means to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. The Global Storage Portfolio, a collation and summary of storage assessments worldwide, found that there are substantial storage resources available in most regions of the world, with almost all nations that have published regional assessments identifying sufficient resources to support multiple CCS projects. However, the methods to determine and classify resources vary greatly across regions, despite reliable assessment methodologies being available. The article also presents case studies on Europe and Southeast Asia to discuss the different approaches being undertaken for their respective regional assessments and their progression towards deployment of CCS.
