Asia-Pacific Region Migration Trends and Policies
The Asia-Pacific region has seen significant migration flows, with Asia-Pacific countries being both major sources and destinations for migrants. The region has made progress in improving migration governance and protecting the rights of migrants, including initiatives to enhance regular migration pathways, fair and ethical recruitment, and access to basic services. However, challenges remain, such as high recruitment costs, gaps in social security coverage, and the criminalization of irregular migration. The region has also witnessed emerging forms of trafficking, such as trafficking for forced criminality in online scams. Moving forward, the region needs to focus on addressing these challenges and harnessing the potential of migration for sustainable development. This includes promoting gender equality, ensuring the realization of the rights of migrants and their families, and strengthening international cooperation and global partnerships for safe, orderly and regular migration.
