The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) has welcomed the mid-term evaluation of the Commission's road safety policy orientations 2011-2020. They believe that EU level initiatives have contributed to the decreased number of road fatalities during the last couple of years, with substantial reductions achieved in EU Member States since the last two decades. The role of the European Automobile industry in this impressive record has been essential, with the sector consistently sustaining high investments in research and development of safety technologies. ACEA considers EU actions for road safety to have been most efficient and successful in areas such as the introduction of new safety features in vehicles, the promotion of driver education and training, and the development of intelligent transport systems. Despite important differences amongst countries at different stages of their road safety activity and management, the trend of increasing traffic volume over the same period of time has not hindered the reduction of road fatalities and serious injuries.
