The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) has provided key recommendations for the revision of the Batteries Directive 2006/66/EC. The recommendations include harmonizing definitions of second-life/second use and re-use across existing European waste legislation, holding the producer or importer of automotive batteries responsible for what they initially put on the market, allowing End-of-Life Vehicle Directive 2000/53/EC to prevail over any other legislation for industrial batteries coming from end-of-life vehicles, not imposing additional obligations as nearly 100% of industrial and automotive batteries are already being collected, and setting recycling efficiency targets for industrial batteries that are process-related and achievable.
