The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) fully supports the European Commission's goal of reaching climate neutrality by 2050. In July 2021, the Commission proposed a package of 13 legislative proposals, including a revision of Regulation 2019/631 setting CO2 emission performance standards for new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. CO2 emissions from new passenger cars have decreased by 22.4% since 2010, driven by a surge in sales of electrically-chargeable vehicles (ECVs). In the second quarter of 2021, the EU market share of ECVs more than doubled to 15.9% of total car sales. However, investment by the auto industry in ECVs is outpacing investment in infrastructure by a long way. The ACEA proposes that the CO2 and Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) targets must be in sync to support the growth of ECVs.
