The report highlights the challenges in reducing CO2 emissions from cars and vans in Europe. Despite significant investments in vehicle engine technology and efforts to reduce vehicle weight, CO2 emissions from road transport have not decreased as hoped. The report suggests a comprehensive approach to CO2 emissions reduction that includes reducing unnecessary kilometers driven through Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and infrastructure design, alongside continuing innovations in vehicle technology. The adoption of alternative lower carbon fuels and powertrains will be key to meeting the 2020 target of 95g of CO2 per kilometer.
