Europe's car manufacturers are committed to reducing CO2 emissions from passenger cars and light commercial vehicles after 2020, within the EU 2030 energy and climate package. Last year, average new car emissions were 33.7% lower than two decades ago, due to the industry's long-term efforts and continuous investments in innovation. However, current legislation only focuses on new cars and vans, and a comprehensive approach is needed to reduce emissions further. This approach should consider the impact of vehicle use on emissions, drawing on a full spectrum of solutions such as alternative powertrains, faster fleet renewal, intelligent transport systems, improved infrastructure, and altered driver behavior. The market uptake of vehicles with alternative powertrains needs to be fully developed to contribute to meeting emissions targets.
