TheinauguralArup-facilitatedcollaborativeforumtookplaceinFebruary2015,inSanFrancisco—aninternationalhubknownforitsinnovativepractices,advancedtechnologiesandproximitytotheforward-thinkingmindsthatestablishedSiliconValley.Thisforumfocusedonthepassengerexperienceand howtechnologyconvergestoaffecttheFutureoftheAirport,whileinvestigatingemergingtrendsandtechnologiesinordertoassessthepotentialopportunitiesandroadblocksforglobalaviationdevelopment. InDecember2015,theIstanbulForumdevelopedtheseinitialfindingswithafocusonHumanizingtheAirportExperienceandtakingadeeperlookattheentiretravelexperiencefromend-to-endandkeydriverssuchaspassengerscreening,thebag,theterminalofthefutureandtheroleofbigdata. ExecutiveSummary TheFutureofAirTravelIstanbulForumwasanopportunityforawideanddeepappraisaloftheissuesandopportunitiesfacingtheairtravelindustryanditsinfrastructure: 1.PhysicalinflexibilityExistingairportsrequirelabor-intensivephysicalplanningandcapital-intensiveconstruction.Butoncedeliveredtheyareconstantlychallengedbyenvironmentalregulation,economicuncertainty,evolvingsecuritydemands,changingairlinebusinessmodels,andthesheerphysicalinflexibilityofconcreteandsteeltodealwithchangingdemands. 2.DemandforairtravelisinsatiableAirportdevelopmentgrowthplansinmanyregionsoftheworldwilllikelyfailtomeetlong-termdemand–andmanyregionsarealreadyconstrainedintermsofbuildingnewcapacity. 3.Embracenewtechnology,notnewbuildingTechnologicaladvancescancomplementphysicalplanningtominimizebuildingourwayoutofexpecteddemand.However,eveniftechnologytheoreticallyallowsairportstoworksmarter,therearerisksandindustryparticipantsmustsharedata.Thebenefitscouldhoweverbesubstantial,including: •Datasharingbyparticipantstofacilitateend-to-endtravelprocesses. •Reshapingsecurityscreeningtoscreenforintent,whichcouldreducetheneedtoscreenforcapability,whichisthecurrentpractice. •Alternativebaggageprocessesandtechnologieswhichcoulddrivemoreefficientuseofbuildings. •Globalentrymeasurestofacilitateseamlessinternationaltravelandreducetheneed fortraditionalcustomsandimmigrationfacilities. 4.ShareddataThemodernpassengerexperienceisincreasinglydata-driven.Buttherearemultipledataownersthroughouttheend-to-endpassengerexperience,andinsufficientsharing. Itistimefortheaviationindustrytodevelopdeepercollaborationtofacilitatearicherandmoreseamlesspassengerandbagexperience,accountingforcustomerpreferences,patternsandsatisfaction. 5.Screening:capability,intentandriskPassengerscreeningcurrentlychecksforthecapabilitytodoharm,usingsubstantialspaceandresourcestoscreenforprohibiteditems.Risk-basedscreening thatinsteadassessesin
