The Deloitte Media Consumer Survey 2022 reveals that the competition between digital media subscription providers is intensifying, driven by the impact of social media and user-generated content (UGC) on consumer choice. The past decade has seen a significant increase in the share of our entertainment time consumed by social media and UGC, with the unbundling of content and attention becoming more pronounced. Generational differences in how news is defined and what drives trustworthiness in various sources of content are also playing a role in shaping consumer behavior. The survey highlights the need for media providers to adapt to changing consumer habits and explore alternative models, such as social media and the metaverse, to remain competitive in the digital entertainment landscape.
