Sri Lanka made a successful transition to online higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the use of quality videoconferencing systems like Zoom. However, students have shown signs of fatigue due to limited interactions with staff, extended screen time, lack of practical sessions, and online proctored exams. Poor internet connection and lack of access to digital devices remain key challenges, with many students relying on smartphones for tasks that require laptops or desktops and a landline connection. While government and private telecommunication industry measures have been instrumental in continuing online education, cost-effective measures need to be explored further to address emerging challenges.
