The Language Trends 2020 survey, conducted by the British Council, assesses the situation for language teaching and learning in primary and secondary schools in England. The survey aims to evaluate the impact of policy measures on languages and analyze strengths and weaknesses based on both quantitative evidence and teacher views. This year's survey received ethical approval from the Research Ethics Committee at Queen's University Belfast. The data collection phase was carried out from early March to mid-April 2020, coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in fewer responses than in previous years. The survey received responses from 608 primary schools and 320 secondary schools, representing all regions of England but with a low participation rate from independent schools.
