The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) supports the EU's objective of reducing road casualties and welcomes the initiative to revise safety regulations. An integrated approach is needed, examining the benefits of combining new technology with improving road infrastructure and driver behavior. Active safety measures can reduce accidents, while passive safety measures may have negative impacts. The introduction of autonomous driving features will further improve safety, but a coherent approach across all services within the European Commission and member states is required. ACEA recommends focusing on active safety measures, conducting detailed cost-benefit analysis and impact assessment for all measures, considering synergies between measures addressing the same type of accidents, and taking into account the different usage and characteristics of vehicles. The most effective measures, according to ACEA, are autonomous emergency braking systems for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, and heavy trucks.
