The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Report on Social Entrepreneurship is based on interviews with 150,000 adults in 49 countries during 2009. The report documents the prevalence of social entrepreneurship in a population through a standardized survey in each country. The report takes a broad view of social entrepreneurship and allows for further classification into various subcategories based on follow-up questions with individuals in the population screened out as social entrepreneurs. The report finds that the percentage of the population that is explicit about its involvement in social activities is higher than previously thought, with 3.5% of the population engaged in social entrepreneurship. The report also highlights the role of social entrepreneurs in addressing social and environmental issues, and the potential for social entrepreneurship to drive economic growth and development.
