Motorisedtravelincitieswillberequiredtofitinto,ratherthanbeatthecentreof,planningdecisions.Indevelopingcountries,rapidpopulationgrowthandtheriseindemandformobilitywillrequirepoliciesandmeasurestoavoidrepeatingthemistakesofthedevelopedworld.Thiswilltakeforesightaswellasstrongleadership. ©Arup Advancedtechnologiessuchasautonomousvehicles,lightermaterialsandintelligenttransportsolutionswillallplayapartinmanagingtheincreaseinpassengerandfreightmobility.Changingtravelbehaviourswillalsohaveasignificantimpactonthetransportsolutionsofthefuture.As moreeffectiveuseismadeofthebigdataassociatedwithourtransportnetworks,therewillbeincreasingacceptabilityofnewownershipmodels,rapidgainsinthequalityoftravelplanning,andincreasingly sophisticatedcustomerdecision-makingtoolsandcapabilities. Thelong-termgoalwillbetocreateanintegratedtransportnetworkwithseamlessconnectionstomultiplemodes,includingcars,buses,rail,andnon-motorisedtransport.Bythinkingacrossmodes,wecanmovetowardsaconnected,low-carbonfuture. Theaimofthisreportistolookbeyondday-to-daychallengesandthinkabouttheforcesdrivingchange,andhowthesemightshapetheroadsandhighwaysofthefuture.Bypushingtheboundariesinthinkingaboutwhatispossibleinhighwaysdesign,thehopeisthattheroadsofthefuturewillcontinuetoprovidebenefitsforeconomicgrowth,productivityandconnectivitywhileminimisinganynegativeimpactsassociatedwithhighwayconstructionandoperation.
