The 22nd edition of the World Energy Markets Observatory provides an overview of the global energy markets in 2019 and 2020. In 2019, the worldwide economy slowed down, resulting in a slower energy consumption increase. The growth of electricity consumption across the G20 countries slowed down, with China accounting for a third of G20 electricity consumption and posting a 4.5% growth, but much lower than the average growth observed since 2007. In 2020, the world suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis that followed, plunging our world into a long period of uncertainty. The report highlights the contrasted evolution between developed countries mastering energy and fossil fuel consumption and developing countries, with fossil fuel consumption and emissions growth continuing in developing countries, particularly China.
