The workshop on Motorcyclists Safety: Riding in a Safe System focused on the situation of motorcycles in Latin America. The region has a large population of 605 million people, with Mexico and Brazil accounting for 330 million. The motorcycle fleet in Latin America has grown significantly in recent years, with Paraguay experiencing a 338% growth between 2011 and 2019. The reasons for this growth include a lack of public transportation, high congestion in cities, low costs of motorcycles, and their ability to provide work and door-to-door transport. However, the use of motorcycles is associated with a high rate of fatalities, with young people (15-29 years) being the most affected. The workshop aimed to address the challenges and areas of attention in road safety, including mobility plans, training and licensing, road infrastructure, vehicle requirements, and youth and children safety on motorcycles. The workshop also highlighted the need for policy discussions and research in the region to address the issue of motorcycle fatalities.
