ABSTRACT:Weinvestigatehowtradeshocksaffecttheallocationoflaboracrossplantsatthelocallabormarketlevel.UsingBrazil’simportliberalizationasaquasi-naturalexperiment,weuncoveranewmarginforthegainsfromtrade:thereallocationoflaborfromsmallertolargerproducersinthenon-tradedsector.Wefindthatinresponsetoliberalization,largernon-tradedproducersself-selectintoimporting,expandingastheygainaccesstoinputsfromabroad.Wethendevelopaparsimoniousmodelofheterogeneousproducersincorporatingthismechanism.Thetheoryisconsistentwiththeempiricalfindingsandshowthatreallocationamongnon-tradedproducersiswelfare-enhancing.Incontrast,thisreallocationeffectdisappearswhenallnon-tradedproducersmakethesameimportingdecision.
