ABSTRACT:UndocumentedmigrationfromtheNorthernTrianglecountries(ElSalvador,GuatemalaandHonduras)totheUnitedStateshasbeensteadilyincreasingoverthepast30years,acceleratingattimes.Thepaperinvestigateswhatfactorscouldexplainthisfact,byestimatinganinvestmentdecisionmodel,usingannualdataover1990-2019.Economiclabormarketconditions(realwagesandunemploymentrates,especiallyintheU.S.)playamajorroleinexplainingundocumentedmigration.Lessexploreddriversofundocumentedmigrationtiedtolivingconditionsathomealsoexplainwellundocumentedmigration(naturaldisasters,coffeeproduction,highertemperatures,andhomiciderates).Tighterborderenforcementmeasuresactasadeterrent,andperceptionsregardingchangesofthesemeasurescouldalsodriveupundocumentedmigrationattimes.Policiesthataddresstherootcausesofmigrationathome,includingwiththeU.S.help,areessentialinreducingthedifferencebetweenperceivedbenefitsandexpectedcostsofmigration.
