ABSTRACT:AftertrailingEuroAreainflationcloselyintherecentpast,inflationintheWesternBalkanshasacceleratedfastersinceearly2022onthebackoftheshockstoglobalcommodityprices,strongrecoveryfromthepandemic,andlingeringsupplybottlenecks.ThispaperemploystwocomplementaryempiricalapproachesofanaugmentedPhillipscurveandstructuralVAR,adaptingthemtothedataavailabilityandcountryspecificitiesoftheWesternBalkans,toanalyzetheinflationdynamicsintheregion.Itfindsthatinternationalfoodpricesaffectnotonlyheadlinebutalsocoreinflationaswellasinflationexpectations.Further,inflationintheWesternBalkansisnotjustdeterminedbyforeignshocks,anddomesticfactors,aggregatedemandshocksinparticular,haveasignificantimpactoninflation.Thesefindingsimplyapossibleroleforpoliciestotemporarilylimitanimmediateandcompletepass-throughofinternationaltodomesticfoodpriceswhilealsostressingtheimportanceofanappropriatedomesticmacroeconomicpolicymixtokeepinflationexpectationsanchoredandsafeguardcredibilityinthefaceofhighinflationpersistence. ThemotivationofthispaperistounderstandtheinflationdynamicsintheWesternBalkans(WB)anddiscusspolicyimplications.Whilemuchasintherestoftheworld,theshockstoglobalenergyandfoodpricesarethemaindriversofthecurrentsurgeininflationintheWB,weexplorehowthecharacteristicsoftheseeconomiesmayhaveinteractedwiththeglobalshocks.Weseektounderstandtowhatextentinflationmaybebecomingentrenched,andwhatroledomesticfactorsmayplay,asweseeheadlineinflationappearingtopeakinsomecountrieswhilecoreinflationremainselevated.Thesearerelevantquestionsforpolicymakersintheregion,whofacethedifficulttasksofcarefullycalibratingthemacroeconomicpolicymixtopreservepricestabilityandkeepinflationexpectationsanchored,whileprotectingvulnerablepopulationsfromsharpcommoditypriceshocksandsafeguardingtheeconomicrecovery. Ourempiricalstrategytotacklethesequestionsconsistsoftwocomplementaryapproaches.Wefirstemployareduced-formPhillipscurvemodel,augmentedwithinternationalfoodandenergypricesasexplanatoryvariables,which,asweshow,areparticularlyrelevantfortheWB.Weestimatethemodelfordifferentmeasuresofinflationonpanelquart
