InJune2022,theFinancialStabilityBoard(FSB)andInternationalMonetaryFund(IMF)announcedthecompletionoftheG20InitiativetoCloseDataGapsidentifiedintheglobalfinancialcrisis.TheypublishedareporttomarkthecompletionofthesecondphaseoftheG20DataGapsInitiative(DGI-2)onJune9,2022;andthereportalsolaysoutprioritiesforanewinitiativeledbytheIMFtoaddressgapsrelatingtoemergingpolicyneeds.Thereportfindsthatsignificantprogresshasbeenmadeinaddressingdatagapsidentifiedduringtheglobalfinancialcrisisof2007-08throughthetwophasesoftheDataGapsInitiative(Initiative),includinginthedevelopmentofconceptualframeworks,andimprovementsindatacoverage,timeliness,andperiodicity.Buildingontheclosecollaborationamongtheparticipatingeconomiesandinternationalorganizations,thepeerpressuremechanism,andexplicitsupportfromtheG20,policymakersnowhaveabetterunderstandingoftherisksandvulnerabilitiestheireconomiesface.Thedataimprovementshavehelpedthemtodevelopeffectivepolicyresponsesincluding,forexample,totheCovid-19pandemic.However,despitetheprogressmadeduringtheInitiative,challengesonsecuritiesstatistics,internationalinvestmentposition,internationalbankingstatistics,andpublicsectordebtstatisticsetc.remainforsomeparticipatingeconomiesinfullyclosingdatagapsrelatedtosomeDGI-2recommendations.Participatingeconomiesandinternationalorganizationswillcontinuetoaddresstheremainingchallengesandtheirimplementationwillbemonitoredonanannualbasis.
