The2021/2022financialyearwasfullofcomplicationsandchallenges.Thecoronavirusdisease2019(the“COVID-19”)pandemichasshapedmanyaspectsofourlivesthispastyearanddisruptedourusualwayoflifeandthewaywedidbusiness.Withthefifthwaveofthepandemicundercontrolinthefirstquarterof2022,themarketsentimenthasshowngradualbutslowimprovementsincethen. Nevertheless,anyrecoveryfromthevirus-hitmarketwouldlikelybeslowduetotheuncertaintyofanyfuturefurtheroutbreakofnewstrainsofBA.4andBA.5Omicronandthereturnofstrictpreventivemeasuressuchassocialdistancing,lockdownofaffectedareas,closingoffspecificpublicvenues,mandatoryhospitalquarantineandothertravelrestrictionetc.Inaddition,globaluncertaintyresultingfromgeopoliticalandmilitaryconflictsandtradeandeconomicsanctionsleadstorisingcommodities,oil,andgasprices,causingworldwideinflationandrisinginterestrates.Itthreatenstodampenconsumerconfidenceandmarketsentimentworldwide.InthePeople’sRepublicofChina,strictOmicronclosed-offmanagementinmajorcitiesdisruptedthelogisticchains,causingthefallofgrossdomesticproduct(“GDP”)inthesecondquarterof2022,hamperingtheGDPgrowthin2022.InHongKong,theactualGDPgrowthforecastfor2022wasreviseddownto1%–2%followingtheoutbreakofthefifthwaveofCOVID-19inMay2022. Thegovernment’snewroundoftheConsumptionVoucherScheme2022,togetherwiththe2022EmploymentSupportSchemeandTemporaryUnemploymentReliefScheme,wouldgeneratemorecustomerdemandinHongKongretail,cateringandfoodandbeveragemarkets,facilitatingtherecoveryofHongKongeconomylaterin2022.
