To support the achievement ofglobal climate goals, the transport system isundergoing a fundamental transformation in howit is fuelled and powered.Electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries are amongthe “new three” products significantly contributingto China’s export growth. China’s automotivesector is playing a championing role in globalclimate action and has made substantial progressin reducing environmental impact, improving waterand material efficiency and scaling circularity to putgreen development into practice.Yet we need to raise ambition and accelerateenvironmental action as an industry, thinking biggerthan net zero to also include nature-positive goals. In the global context of achieving a net-zero andnature-positive future, a more holistic transitionpresents even more opportunities. By systematicallyrecognizing the automotive sector’s impacts anddependencies on nature and setting strategiesaccordingly, leading players in the sector cansignificantly enhance their global competitiveness.Robin ZengFounder, Chairmanand Chief ExecutiveOfficer, ContemporaryAmperex Technology Co.,Limited (CATL) Nature Positive:Role of the Automotive Sector – China Deep-dive Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited(CATL) is committed to driving innovation inbattery technology, integrating sustainability intoevery aspect of its operations – from design andproduction to product life cycle management – andcollaborating with partners throughout the valuechain to maximize positive environmental impact.By 2025, CATL aims to achieve carbon neutralityin its core operations and extend this to the entirebattery supply chain by 2035. Additionally, CATLplans to increase the use of renewable energy to50% by 2030 and implement over 500 energy-saving projects by 2025, reducing carbon emissionsby at least 600,000 tons annually. Furthermore,we’re collaborating with suppliers to continueenhancing practices on waste treatment, monitoringand recycling of resources, and protecting soil andfreshwater system.Seizing opportunities in the global nature-positivetransition won’t be easy, but with collaborationand partnership, value and positive impact can becreated urgently and at scale. We call on our peersin China and global partners in the automotivesector to work together for our long-term prosperityand the vision of living in harmony with nature onour home planet.3 ForewordWe are faced with intertwined, multifacetedglobal challenges. These include immediateimpacts such as record-breaking heatwaves, unprecedented floods in atypical regions and otherextreme weather events significantly driven byclimate change, as well as those rapidly evolvingsilent beasts exemplified by biodiversity loss andecosystem collapse. Our window to reverse globalnature loss is rapidly closing. The philosophy of living in harmony with natureis deeply rooted in Chinese culture, reflected inancient philosophies like Taoism and Confucianismand modernizing its culture integrated withecological civilization. This enduring wisdom mustbe urgently awakened and translated into action. The World Economic Forum, in collaboration withOliver Wyman, has been working in the past twoyears to assess how environmental challengesTim ColyerClimate and SustainabilityLead, Asia Pacific,Oliver Wyman Nature Positive:Role of the Automotive Sector – Chi
