ABSTRACT:Globalgeopoliticaltensionshaveriseninrecentyears,andEuropeanenergypriceshavebeenvolatilefollowingRussia’sinvasionofUkraine.SomeanalystshavesuggestedthattheseshiftingconditionsmaysignificantlyaffectFDIbothtoandfromGermany.ToshedlightonthisissueandotherfactorsaffectingGermanFDI,weleveragetwodetailedandcomplementaryFDIdatasetstoexplorerecenttrendsinGermanFDIandhowitisaffectedbygeopoliticaltensionsandenergyprices.Indoingso,wealsodevelopanewmeasureofgeopoliticalalignment.Ourmainfindingsincludethefollowing:(i)thepost-pandemicrecoveryinGermany’sinwardandoutwardFDIhasbeenweakerthanintheUSortherestoftheEuropeanUnion(EU27)asawhole;(ii)Germany’soutwardFDIlinkageswithgeopoliticallydistantcountrieshavebeenweakeningsincetheGlobalFinancialCrisis;(iii)therelationshipbetweenGermany’soutwardFDIandgeopoliticaldistancehasbecomemorepronouncedoverthelastsixyears;(iv)Germany’soutwardFDItoChina-Russia-bloccountriesismoresensitivetorecentgeopoliticaldevelopmentscomparedwiththattoUS-bloccountries;and(v)Germany’soutwardFDIinenergy-intensivesectorsdecreasesasdestinationcountries’energycostsincrease,butenergycostsdonotappeartohaveastatisticallysignificanteffectonoutwardFDIinnon-energy-intensivesectors.
