UnderBobHawkeandPaulKeatingthepercentageofyoungpeoplefinishinghighschooljumpedfromabout40percenttoalmost80percent.Thatwasnationchanging. Nowwehavetotakethenextstep. OverthenextquarterofacenturyAustraliaisgoingtoneedmoreteachers,morenurses,moredoctors,moreICTworkers,moreengineersthanwehavetoday.Thatmeans moreAustraliansgoingontouniversityorTAFE. TheAustralianUniversitiesAccordprovidesuswithablueprinttohelpustakethisstep. TheGovernmentissettingthenationchanginggoalofliftingtertiaryeducationattainmentto80percentofworkingagedpeopleby2050. Reachingthisambitioustertiaryeducationattainmenttargetwilldeliverbenefitsdirectlytoindividualsaswellasthenationaleconomy. Itmeanswewillhavetheskilledworkforceournationrequirestomeetthechallengesofthefuture.ItalsomeanshigherincomesandlessrelianceonsocialsecuritysupportformoreAustralians. Toachievethiswehavetobreakdowntwobigbarriers.OneofthoseistheinvisiblebarrierstoppingalotofAustraliansfrom disadvantagedbackgrounds,theoutersuburbsandtheregionsgettingaccesstohighereducation.Theotheristheartificialbarrierbetweenourhighereducationsystemandourvocationaleducationsystem.
