Connectivityisthebackboneofacompetitivedigitalandgreeneconomy.However,theEuropeanCommission’s2023ReportontheStateoftheDigitalDecadeshowsthatunlessurgentactionistaken,theEUwillnotmeetitsconnectivitytargetsintime.Thisisbecausethetelecomssectorisfacingunprecedentedandsystemicchallengesinrollingouttheinfrastructurenecessarytoachievethisgoal. ConnectingEuropeto2030 1/16 Excessivemarketfragmentation,spectrumcostsandanoutdatedregulatoryframeworkhavecausedthetelecomsector’srevenuestodecrease,despitegrowingrelianceondigital networks.Europeantelcoshavelostastaggering80%oftheirmarketvalueoverthepast20years,whilerevenuesacrossthebroaderinternetecosystemhavesignificantlyincreased1.Thissituation,compoundedbyinflation,energyand environmentalcrises,hasfurtherdeterioratedthefinancialperformanceandinvestmentcapacityofthesector.ForEuropetoeffectivelycompeteintheglobaleconomyandtechrace,aparadigmshiftisurgentlyneeded.
