Climatechangeishappeningmorerapidlythanscientistshavepredicted,withheatwaves,droughts,forestfires,rising sealevelsandothernaturalphenomenabecomingincreasinglyfrequentandstartingtohavesignificantimpacts.Climatechangeisprimarilyduetohumanactivitiesreleasinglargeamountsofcarbondioxide(CO2)andmethaneintotheatmosphere. CO2emissionshaverisenbymorethan50%comparedwithpre-industrial levels,fromabout278partspermillion(ppm)toabout417ppminearly2021.Theglobalaveragetemperatureinthe2000-2019periodwas1.2°Chigherthaninthe1850-1900period.Based ontheagreementreachedatthe2021ConferenceoftheParties(COP26)totheUnitedNationsFrameworkConventiononClimateChange,analystsfromresearchgroupClimateActionTrackerpredicta2.4°Cincreaseby21001. ARacetoZeroemissionsisnecessarytohaltglobalwarming.Evenifsuchefforts aresuccessful,however,theadverseeffectsofariseinCO2havealreadybeenlockedintotheclimatesystem.Thismeansthatclimatechangeimpactswillcontinueformanyyears,giventhetimelagbetweenproducingcarbonemissionsandseeingtheireffectsontheclimate. Themetaphorofaheavytrainisoftenused:youcan’tstopitatonce;therewillbeadelaybetweenhittingthebrakesandthetraincomingtoahalt. Inviewofthat,weurgentlyneedtoadaptandbraceourselvesforwhatwecannotprevent.TheUN-backedRacetoResiliencecampaignaimstocatalyseastepchangeinglobalambitionforclimateresilience.Thisprogrammeputspeopleandnaturefirst,inpursuitofaresilientworldwherewedonotjustsurviveclimateshocksandstresses,butthriveinspiteofthem. Asacommunityofcitystakeholders,wecanhelpturnpledgesintoaction.Thispublicationoffersinsightsintohowpractitionersofthebuiltenvironmentcancontributetothecollective2050goalofachievingnet-zeroemissions,capitalisingontheoutcomesof COP26andgivingprioritytothemostvulnerablepeopleandcommunities.
