Despitetheimportanceofhavingacommondefinitionofgreenjobstobeusedbyresearchersandpolicymakers,thereiscurrentlynoconsensusonasingleconceptyet,letalonehowtoidentifytheminpractice.Ontheonehand,thereisagreementthatgreenjobsaimtoreduceenvironmentalimpactbybothproducingenvironmentallyfriendlyoutputsandpromotingenvironmentallyfriendlyproductionprocesses.Ontheotherhand,thescopeofwhatgreenjobsshouldencompassvaries.Forsome,adefinitionofgreenjobsshouldincludealljobsthataresomehowassociatedwiththegreeningoftheeconomy,regardlessofwhetherthejobitselfcontributestoreducingtheimpactontheenvironment.Supportersofthisviewincludeallenvironmentallyneutraljobs,thatis,jobsthatdonotharmtheenvironmenteveniftheydonothelptopreserveit.Othersincludewhatisusuallyreferredtoas"greeningjobs"orjobsforagreenereconomyorindirectgreenjobs.Thesearejobsthatdonotdirectlycontributetopreservingtheenvironmentbutmightbein-demandaspartofthegreentransformation.Lastly,someinstitutionsliketheILOaddthe"decentjob"layertothedefinition:agreenjobnotonlyneedsnottodamagetheenvironment,butitalsoneedstopayadequatewagesandprovideworkerprotection.
