The Language Trends 2018 survey is an annual study of primary and secondary schools in England, aimed at understanding the current situation for language teaching and learning. The survey gathered data from 692 primary schools and 785 secondary schools, representing schools with lower levels of free school meal eligibility and higher levels of educational attainment. The findings suggest that the proportion of students taking a language GCSE has not continued to increase since the subject was removed from the compulsory curriculum at Key Stage 4 in 2004. However, the English Baccalaureate, introduced in 2011, has resulted in a rise in the number of students taking a language GCSE to 49% in 2014. The Government's ambition is for 90% of pupils to obtain the English Baccalaureate by 2025.
