The New EU Urban Mobility Framework provides a renewed policy framework to help cities meet their objectives for sustainable mobility. The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) fully supports the framework's aim of striving for more sustainable, inclusive, affordable, and resilient urban mobility. To ensure the success of the framework's initiatives, local, regional, national, and European authorities should consider nine key points:
- Place transport users at the center of transport planning, acknowledging that mobility needs are not homogenous and a variety of sustainable mobility options is needed.
- Internalize the impact of individual mobility choices by users through coherent pricing policies.
- Address transport-related issues of lower income and special needs groups, such as the disabled and the elderly, and connectivity issues between rural, peri-urban, and urban areas.
- Encourage the use of public transport, cycling, and walking through investments in infrastructure and services.
- Promote the electrification of the vehicle fleet, including electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles, and ensure a robust charging and refueling infrastructure.
- Foster the development of shared mobility services, such as car-sharing and bike-sharing, to reduce the number of cars on the road.
- Support the deployment of autonomous and connected vehicles, which have the potential to improve safety, efficiency, and accessibility.
- Ensure that the framework's initiatives are financially sustainable and take into account the different economic and social realities of cities.
- Foster international cooperation and exchange of best practices to promote sustainable urban mobility worldwide.
