Today,Chinaisagainhometosomeofthelargestcitiesintheworld,playingleadingrolesintheglobaleconomy.Itistemptingtoholdontorecentimages,embeddedinthecollectivepsyche,ofthesemetropolisesasthrivingepicentresofeconomicdynamismwhileatthesametimefacingsignificantenvironmentalchallengesasaresultofindustrialisation.Thesecharacteristicsarestillverymuchinevidence,andthisreportacknowledgesthemandoffersarangeofsystematicremedies.However,oneofitsconclusionsisthatChina’scitiesareshowingsignsthattheyarealreadyontheirwaytoregainingtheirmantleasinnovationhubs.Forexample,inChinathevolumeofmobilepaymentsfarexceedsthoseoftheUS,anditssharingeconomyisprojectedtoaccountforover10%ofGDPby2020.Indeed,inthebroadsweepofhistory,itistobehopedthattheperiodofindustrialcatch-upinChinawillbeamerebliponthewaytowardsapositiveandresilientmodelofgrowth.
