The UC Berkeley Center for Labor Research and Education's Director, Annette Bernhardt, testified before the Little Hoover Commission on January 25, 2018, regarding the impact of new technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics on the future of work in California. Bernhardt argues that the perception of automation and its effects on employment as inevitable is a dominant one, but new research suggests that large-scale automation may not occur in the near and medium term. Bernhardt believes that public policy should play a role in shaping California's future and that the interests of workers and their communities should be included in the development of a transparent public policy framework for assessing the impact of emerging technologies.
