The Breakthrough Incubator is a model developed by Arthur D. Little to help companies create and launch new step-out businesses. Many companies struggle to achieve the expected revenue growth through organic means or by acquisition, and therefore prioritize improving their breakthrough innovation performance. However, despite some successes, many companies fail to create sustainable new businesses of scale. The Breakthrough Incubator model addresses this challenge by externalizing the entire end-to-end innovation process and managing it through a lead delivery partner and a network of other players. This approach allows for a "build, operate, transfer" philosophy specifically applied to innovation and product development. The key features of the model include ADL holding full responsibility for delivery and acting as an "orchestrator", conducting every part of the process from ideation to launch and commercialization.
