The number of cyberattacks on schools is on the rise, with K-12 education entities experiencing a total of 348 incidents in 2019, according to the K-12 Cybersecurity Resource Center. Data breaches and ransomware were the most common types of incidents, with insiders in the school community being responsible for over half of the data breaches. Cybersecurity is the top priority for IT leaders, as identified in the CoSN's "K-12 IT Leadership Survey Report" for the third year in a row. However, schools are still struggling to embed a culture of security into their operations. IT experts suggest that schools should focus on improving their IT operations and effectiveness, promoting cybersecurity awareness, and implementing effective security measures to protect against future attacks.
