The research commissioned by Luminate aims to provide insights for news organizations in Latin America as they build out their digital offerings and seek to increase revenue from subscriptions. The research is based on consumer feedback and builds on the work of Velocidad, an accelerator program led by ICFJ and SembraMedia and funded by Luminate in 2019. The research includes 80 in-depth interviews with digital news consumers in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico, as well as 10 interviews with readers without subscriptions and 10 interviews with readers who have some type of subscription. The research objectives are to explore consumer interest in paying for digital news access and to understand the drivers of a successful subscription model.
