The Global CCS Institute reports that geological storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) is a proven technology that can help address climate change by removing greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere. CO2 is naturally stored in geological systems, and the oil and gas industry has used it for enhanced oil recovery for decades. Effective storage sites have sufficient millimetre-sized voids, connected pores, and an extensive cap rock to contain the CO2 permanently. There are many locations globally with formations that meet these characteristics, most of which are in sedimentary basins associated with oil and gas production.
