The International Energy Agency's executive director, Dr Fatih Birol, stated at the World Economic Forum that humanity is facing its first global energy crisis. The crisis is characterized by soaring prices for oil, natural gas, and coal, and energy security is now a priority for many governments. Birol emphasized that clean and renewable energy sources should be the foundation of the solution to the crisis, but governments are struggling to balance energy security, sustainability, and affordability. The pursuit of any two of these goals often comes at the expense of the third, creating the energy trilemma.
