The UK is facing a growing problem with fraud, with the Annual Fraud Report 2022 calling for greater cross-sector action to tackle the issue. Fraudsters are becoming increasingly skilled and are adapting their methods to exploit vulnerabilities and changes in consumer lifestyles and behavior since Covid. A key concern is the rise in impersonation scams and authorized push payment (APP) fraud, which saw UK Finance members report 195,996 incidents in 2021 with gross losses of £583.2m. The problem is widespread, with eight out of 10 people surveyed by communications regulator Ofcom last year targeted with scam texts or phone calls designed to convince them they were from trusted organizations such as banks, the NHS or government departments.
