ABSTRACT Thisstudyintroducesamethodologytoestimatetheeconomy-specifictaskcontentofoccupationsacrosseconomiesatdifferentincomelevels.Combiningthesewithemploymentdatain87economies,theresultsshowthatoccupationsinlow-andmiddle-incomeeconomiesaremoreroutine-intensivethaninhigh-incomeeconomies,whichisattributedtolowertechnologyuseinless-developedeconomies.Non-routineworkcontinuestodominateinhigh-incomeeconomieswhileroutineworkremainsinlow-incomeandmiddle-incomeeconomies.Thesefindings,usingeconomy-specificestimatesofoccupationaltaskcontent,contradicttheassumptionbasedonconventionalmeasuresthattaskcontentofoccupationsisconvergingglobally.Thefindingofdivergenttrendsintherelativeroutineintensityofworkindevelopedanddevelopingeconomieshasimportantpolicyimplications.Investmentinskills,technologyuse,andparticipationinglobalvaluechainsarekeyfactorsforworkcontentandproductivitytoconvergewiththoseinhigh-incomeeconomies.Theassumptionthatoccupationsareconverginggloballymayalsooverestimatetheroleofroutine-replacingtechnologicalchangeinexplainingwageinequalityinlow-ormiddle-incomeeconomies.
