The ACEA Position Paper on Methanol as a Gasoline Blending Component discusses the potential of methanol as an alternative fuel. Methanol is relatively easy and cheap to produce from various feedstocks, making it a potentially cheaper energy carrier than gasoline. Methanol is also seen as having a potential role in domestic energy security and regional development in China. However, the use of methanol as a fuel component remains low worldwide, with only a few countries still using it and China having a fragmented market with several regional standards. The latest version of the World-Wide Fuel Charter also does not include methanol as a fuel component.
