The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) has published its 2019-2020 Automobile Industry Pocket Guide, which provides an overview of the automotive sector in Europe. The sector provides direct and indirect jobs to 13.8 million Europeans, representing 6.1% of total EU employment. In 2018, EU manufacturers produced 16.5 million passenger cars and more than 2.6 million commercial vehicles, with almost 6.1 million of those exported, generating a trade surplus of €84.4 billion for the EU. The auto industry is also a vital source of government revenue, with taxation on vehicles worth €428 billion per year in the EU15 countries alone. Manufacturers are committed to addressing environmental challenges, with total CO2 emissions from car production reduced by 34.7% since 2005 and the use of water per car produced cut by 44.1% during the same period. The industry is also working towards making mobility cleaner, smarter, and safer in the future.
