This report highlights the disproportionate retirement income and poverty rates among Black and Latino seniors compared to their white counterparts. Black and Latino seniors are more likely to be in the lowest income group among retirees, rely more heavily on Social Security, and have less access to other types of retirement income. Elder poverty rates are twice as high among Blacks and Latinos compared to the US elder population as a whole. Less than half of employed Blacks and less than a third of employed Latinos in full-time jobs are covered by an employer-sponsored retirement plan, which is a critical resource in ensuring adequate retirement income. The report suggests that job access and quality are critical to improving retirement prospects for the current generation of Black workers.
