ABSTRACT:Thispaperpresentsanewglobaldatasetoncurrentpracticesforfourbudgetitemsintermsofindexationtothepricelevelandothernominalvariables.Compilingdatafromdocumentsofselectmultilateralorganizations,governments,andrelatedliteratureaswellasconductingasurveyamongIMFcountrydesksof190country-members,weshowhowindexationisinternationallyappliedin(i)personalincometaxbrackets;(ii)pensions;(iii)socialassistanceprograms;and(iv)publicwages.Thedatasetshowsthatwhileindexationpoliciesvarysignificantlyacrosseconomies,sometrendscanbeidentified.Forexample,indexationismorecommononpensionandsocialgrantsthanontaxes,andfallswiththedegreeofeconomicdevelopment.Wefurtherdiscusssomeapplicationsofthisnewdataset.Thoseincludeanaccountingexerciseillustratingtheimpactsofindexationonfiscaloutcomesduringepisodesofinflationsurprises;andananalysisoftheassociationbetweentheoveralldegreeofindexationcombiningthefourbudgetitemsandinflationpersistence.
